- Coverage to be complemented by bespoke editorial content
Eurosport will offer the sport of shooting global exposure like never before in the lead up to Tokyo 2020 after agreeing a wide-ranging deal with the International Shooting Sport Federation (“ISSF”).
The partnership with Eurosport shows some of the flagship events on the ISSF calendar across Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions in up to 65 countries, World Cups and European Championships, giving the sport consistent international exposure in the lead up to next summer’s Olympic Games. At the most of these events the Olympic quotas are distributed.
Coverage of these events on Eurosport and Eurosport Player will be supported by an integrated digital and linear advertising campaign. Eurosport will also produce and amplify a comprehensive range of bespoke editorial content to engage a large audience, including a three-part Sport Explainer series outlining the intricacies of pistol, rifle and shotgun, a three-part Athlete Spotlight Session giving fans the chance to get to know the best shooters in the world as well as a one-off episode of Eurosport’s brilliant Zoom series.
Laurent Prud’homme, SVP Rights Acquisitions and Syndication, Eurosport, said: “Shooting is one of the original sports on the Olympic program and with Tokyo 2020 just around the corner, it is the perfect time to showcase the sport to millions of fans across the globe watching on Eurosport.
“The agreement with the ISSF strengthens our Olympic narrative with viewers able to enjoy over 75% of the disciplines they’ll be able to watch in Tokyo across our network all-year round.”
Vladimir Lisin, ISSF President, added: “This co-operation with Eurosport in the lead up to Tokyo 2020 is proof that one of the most “historic” sports in the Olympic Games and this new partnership is a further move to modernise how the sport is presented to fans across Europe. The shooting sport is one of a few in the Olympic program where the skills of the athletes are complemented by the use of the latest technologies. It’s important that the technologies used in the sport don’t eclipse the efforts of the athletes but give an equal chance to everybody and ensure the results are fair. The athletes have to exert immense control both physically and mentally to hit a target and show a result that is often measured in millimetres.”
Categorised in three disciplines – rifle, pistol and shotgun – shooting was one of the nine events at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and has been on the program at every Olympics except 1904 and 1928. 97 nations were represented at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro over 15 specific shooting events with 161 national federations across the globe.
The agreement with the ISSF means Eurosport has now committed to screening three-quarters of all Olympic disciplines on its platforms in the lead-up to Tokyo 2020.
