CMP Welcomes New State Directors in Texas and North Dakota

July 1, 2020 By Tom McHale

In order to help ensure the cultivation of marksmanship at the ground level, the CMP appoints State Directors to oversee programs in each of the 50 states. The mission of the State Directors is to provide leadership, resource and program information, coordination, networking, motivation and publicity for junior shooting within his or her state. Found out who your CMP State Director is by visiting https://thecmp.org/training-tech/state-director/. Feel free to contact your State Director at any time with questions, comments or concerns.

Currently, there are still open State Director seats in Tennessee and Delaware, for anyone interested in contributing to the cultivation of the current and future world of marksmanship.

The CMP is proud to announce the recruitment of two new State Directors: Tom Headrick of North Dakota and John Becker of Texas. Welcome to the CMP team!

Texas State Director, John Becker, Granbury, TX

John Becker brings over a decade of knowledge on a variety of marksmanship disciplines, including BB gun, light rifle, along with precision air rifle and smallbore rifle. He is certified as a USA Shooting Advanced Rifle Coach, a range safety officer, marksmanship instructor and other coaching and development titles.

His coaching abilities are marked by the individuals he has mentored that have had success at local, regional and national competitions – including the three-time National Champion MCJROTC team, Granbury High School.

“I love this sport and have seen many juniors benefit from participating in it – whether that may be simply learning safe gun handling, the thrill of competing and earning a medal for their efforts, all the way up through competing collegiately or as part of Team USA,” he said.

He went on, “It is the purest of all sports as shape, size, speed do not play a factor as much as disciplined practice and dedication do. I want to continue to see this promoted and moved forward in one of the largest states in the country and one that has produced so many shooting sport athletes.”

In the future, Becker hopes to continue to grow the legacy of the marksmanship sport in Texas by reaching out to all corners of the youth shooting sports scene, including 4-H clubs and JROTC units up through private competition clubs, in order to spread awareness of available programs.

“Opportunities for increased education exist, as I frequently encounter people who do not know opportunities exist for juniors in our sport,” he said.

He would also like to promote education for youth and parents on the various opportunities that are accessible for juniors to learn gun safety, collegiate scholarships and maybe even representing the USA at the Olympics.

Becker has been married for nearly 30 years and has one son.

North Dakota State Director, Tom Headrick, Bismarck, ND

Tom Headrick’s expertise in marksmanship lies around highpower across the course (XTC), long range and smallbore disciplines. He has reached the rank of Master in XTC and the level of Expert in long range.

For the state of North Dakota, Headrick hopes to improve marksmanship participation in highpower and smallbore competition for both adults and juniors.

“Our state did not have a director, and I feel that the shooters of our state would like to have some input with the CMP,” he said.

Outside of marksmanship, he enjoys Judo, ice fishing and travel.

To contact Tom Headrick about current programs available within North Dakota or to suggest ideas for potential future programs, view his contact information at https://thecmp.org/cmp-state-director/ND/.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is a federally chartered 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. It is dedicated to firearm safety and marksmanship training and to the promotion of marksmanship competition for citizens of the United States.
