April 4, 2023 By Tom McHale

In an undefeated season, C. T. Johnson AJROTC goes 8 – 0 and wins their first National Air Rifle ‘New Shooter’ League Title. C. T. Johnson AJROTC is from San Antonio, TX and coached by MAJ Tom Groggett.

The 2023 season featured 76 teams from across the country. Both C. T. Johnson AJROTC and North Brunswick AJROTC, who finished second, had perfect 8 – 0 records. C. T. Johnson AJROTC won by virtual of having the highest seasonal average. Three time league winner, Ozark AJROTC, finished third with a 7 – 1 record.

C. T. Johnson was lead by Elijah Madrigal, who had the high individual score for the team in all 8 games. The remaining team members were Malachi Baker, James Deutscher, Crimson Dunderdale, Macen Dunderdale, Hector Flores, Aidan McGrath, and Ava Meylin Perez.

In five seasons competing in the league, C. T. Johnson has an aggregate 25 wins and 11 loss record.

The National Air Rifle ‘New Shooter’ League is a national team league for clubs and schools. Unique for this league, athletes competing in the league are limited to High School age athletes in their first year of competition. Over 10 weeks each team competes in 8 virtual games, one game each week, with two bye weeks in the season. Each week, each team in the league is paired with another team with a near equal skill level. The teams compete at their home ranges, with the scores merged together online on Scopos’ Result Center.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete’s total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.

Complete 2023 standings are available on Scopos’ Result Center website https://www.orionresults.com/team/LeaguePage.aspx?MatchID=1.1.2023011716292648.3.

The National Air Rifle ‘New Shooter’ League is sponsored by Scopos, makers of the Orion Scoring System and the Athena Electronic Scoring Target, located in Manasass, VA. They may be reached at support@scopos.tech or +1 703.596.0099. Scopos’ website is at www.scopos.tech.
